Shine Like the Sun:

Appendix A: Catalogue of Objects Studied

The following is a catalogue of most of the pottery examined for this study, although material from some very recently studied sites is omitted.

Catalogue number: Each site or collection is assigned a three- letter designation, which forms the prefix for the catalogue numbers. The samples are numbered sequentially within each site or collection, and are ordered in the alphabetical order of the site or collection designations so as to enable easy cross- referencing with the text and figures.

Other Number: This column includes museum accession numbers, field numbers, and similar designators.

Description: This column refers to the typology as developed in this study, and includes Class (see Key), Type (Blue- painted, Lustre-painted, etc.), and Style (e.g., Kashan Lustre 2 equals Kashan Lustre-painted Group Two). Colorants other than those specific to the typology (e.g., Blue-painted has overglaze cobalt-blue paint) are also provided (see Key). For coloured glazes the colorant precedes the glaze (e.g., Cu-t AL is a turquoise alkali-lime glaze and Cu-t OG is an opaque turquoise glaze), while no colorant indicates a white or colourless glaze. Colorants may not be included for every sample, but every illustrated sample certainly includes this data. Painted pottery should state if it is underglaze-painted (ugp), overglaze-painted (ogl), or slip-painted (spp), unless this is specific to the type (Lustre and Basra Blue-painted are both overglaze). Other technological classifications include slip-incised (sin). Samples which post-date the period covered in this study are given their date of production (e.g., 14th C., 15th C.). A "W" in parentheses (W) after the sample description signifies that the sample is a waster.

Petrofabric: Attributions in this column are as defined within this volume; those attributions without brackets are the result of thin-sectioning, those with square brackets have been identified by observation with a 10× hand lens, and brace brackets signify that the particular ceramic type is known to be solely of a particular petrofabric. Some entries in this column include "sp", and these are stonepaste petrofabrics where a clay petrofabric also exists.

Chem. Table: This column refers to the table that reports the results of energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry of the body and/or wavelength-dispersive spectrometry of the glaze.

Petro. Table: This column refers to the tabulated reporting of the petrographic data.

Seriat. Table: This column refers to the tables of seriated attributes for the typological study.

Form Fig: This column indicates the figure in this book that contains a drawing of the vessel form.

Illust: This column indicates the figure where a full drawing of the piece may be found. An entry of "pub" in this column indicates that the piece is published elsewhere.

Date: Entries in this column are inscribed dates.

Reference: This column provides one source of publication of the piece, usually the most accessible or that with the best illustration.
